The course aims to educate workers about the hazards associated with excavations and trenches, such as cave-ins, falls, and hazardous atmospheres, and how to recognize and avoid them.

The course may also include information on the proper use of protective systems such as trench boxes, shoring and shielding systems, and sloping and benching systems. It also covers the soil classification, testing and identification, and the emergency response procedures.
